Safety signs are not posted to annoy people and make them think they are not allowed to go someplace. They are posted to warn people of danger and hazards in an area, on a vehicle, and on the road. They have been designed to be eye catching with bright colors, such as red and yellow, and usually have graphics or lettering on them that tells you why there is a danger. The graphics can be universally understandable. For example, if you are in a non-English speaking country, but see a sign of a person falling backwards, it is telling you that the area you are moving into is slick for some reason and there is the potential that you could fall.
These signs can also be grouped into various categories, from danger to basic safety first. Danger signs have the word ‘Danger’ printed in white on a red oval on a black rectangle. The reason for the danger is listed beneath, such as describing how many volts of electricity are running through the lines behind the sign, or if there is a chemical hazard involved and what chemical it is. If you see this sign and you are not authorized to be in the area then its best that you stay away. You could not only get hurt, you could get killed.
Warning signs are usually bright orange with black lettering and the word ‘Warning’ emblazoned on it somewhere. These signs issue a warning against anything from electrical hazard to possible biohazard if the rules are not followed to telling you that you are coming up to a construction site. Warning signs can also give instructions, such as ‘Chock wheels before loading and unloading’. They do not convey quite the same level of danger as the danger signs, but warning signs should not be ignored.
Caution signs are bright yellow and say ‘Caution’ across the top. These signs usually tell what will happen if you perform a particular action or that you should something in a specific order. ‘Alarm will sound if door is opened’ and ‘Authorized Personnel Only’ are probably the two most common caution signs around. Sometimes these signs will also include graphics conveying what could happen if you do not pay attention.
Notice signs have the word ‘Notice’ in white on a blue background across the top of the sign. While not conveying quite the same level of danger as the other three, these signs should not be ignored. They are telling you to do something in particular that may or may not have anything to do with danger. ‘Visitors must sign in at the front desk’ or ‘Authorized personnel only’ are two very common signs of this type.
The last type of safety signs are called the safety first signs. These say ‘Safety First’ in white on a green background and are general warnings, some with graphics. They are placed in spots that are visible and show people where things are, such as an eyewash station or first aid kit.
None of these signs should be ignored as they are all designed to protect you from harm. If you see one of them in your daily work or travels, take heed to what they are telling you as it could save you from injury or even death.
